It's that time of year... the holidays! :)
The first of which celebrated in our house is Dia de los Muertos, or day of the dead. This is a time to remember loved ones who have passed on, share stories of our favorite memories with them, and pay homage to their lives. Our altar has been a work in progress since the first week of October. Right now, we have been making new calacas to add to the altar.
Calacas are skeleton figures that represent those we are remembering. They are not scary or sad, but joyful and celebratory, representing the fullness of life and a happy afterlife. This holiday helps us to remember that death is a joyous occasion and that these people we love are not gone forever.
